Wedding Dress Silhouettes: What Do They All Mean?

A-line. Ballgown. Mermaid. Fit & flare. Sheath. Drop waist. Mini.

If you've started looking for your wedding dress, you've probably heard all of these words—and maybe thought, Wait… what does that actually mean?

Don't worry. You don't need to walk into your first bridal appointment knowing every wedding dress term in the book. That's what we're here for!

At The Bridal Cottage in North Little Rock, we believe wedding dress shopping should be fun. And sometimes the easiest way to figure out what you love is simply understanding the different silhouettes and seeing how they feel on you.

Let's break it down.

A-Line

The A-line is one of the most classic and versatile wedding dress silhouettes.

It's fitted through the bodice and gradually flows outward from the waist, creating—you guessed it—an “A” shape.

A-line gowns can be romantic, modern, simple, heavily embellished, covered in lace, or completely clean and minimal. It's one of those silhouettes that can take on so many different personalities.

If you aren't sure where to start, an A-line is a wonderful place to begin.

Ballgown

Ready for the bridal moment?

A ballgown has a fitted bodice with a dramatic, full skirt. Think volume, movement, and that unmistakable feeling of walking into a room and feeling like a bride.

Ballgowns can range from classic and traditional to modern and fashion-forward. And don't let the fullness intimidate you—you may be surprised by how much you love the feeling of a big, beautiful skirt.

Fit & Flare

Fit & flare gowns are fitted through the bodice, waist, and hips before beginning to flare out toward the bottom of the gown.

This silhouette can give you the drama of a fitted gown while still allowing for movement through the skirt.

You'll also hear terms like trumpet and mermaid when talking about fitted silhouettes. The biggest difference is generally where the gown begins to flare.

Mermaid

A mermaid gown is fitted through the bodice and hips and typically stays close to the body farther down the skirt before dramatically flaring out.

It's a silhouette that can feel glamorous, dramatic, and very fashion-forward.

And here's something we tell brides all the time: you really can't know how you feel about a silhouette until you put it on.

Sometimes the dress you were sure you wouldn't like becomes the one you can't stop looking at in the mirror.

Sheath

Sheath gowns have a straighter, more streamlined shape that follows the body's natural lines without the dramatic flare of a mermaid or ballgown.

They're often associated with effortless, modern, and elegant bridal style.

A sheath can be beautifully simple—or covered in lace, beading, or other details. It's proof that a gown doesn't need a huge skirt to make a statement.

Drop Waist & Basque Waist

You may also see gowns with a drop waist or basque waist.

Instead of the waistline sitting right at your natural waist, these designs extend lower onto the body.

A basque waist usually dips into a soft V shape, while a drop waist creates a lower, elongated waistline.

These silhouettes can create a beautiful, elongated look and are especially gorgeous when paired with a fuller skirt.

Mini & Short Wedding Dresses

And yes—mini dresses absolutely belong in the bridal conversation!

A shorter wedding dress isn't just for the courthouse.

Brides are wearing minis for rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, reception outfit changes, after-parties, second looks, and even as their actual wedding dress.

A mini can be playful, modern, fashion-forward, or incredibly chic. And sometimes changing into a shorter look later in the day gives you the freedom to dance, celebrate, and really let loose.

Your wedding wardrobe doesn't have to stop at one dress.

So… Which Silhouette Is Right for You?

Here's the secret:

There isn't one “right” silhouette.

Your best friend may have fallen in love with a mermaid. Your sister may have worn an A-line. Your Pinterest board may be filled with ballgowns.

And you may walk into your appointment thinking you know exactly what you want… only to fall completely in love with something you never pictured yourself wearing.

That's part of the fun.

At The Bridal Cottage, we've been helping Arkansas brides find their wedding dresses for decades. Our North Little Rock bridal boutique is filled with gowns in a variety of silhouettes, fabrics, necklines, and styles, giving you the chance to step out of the Pinterest board and actually experience what you love on your own body.

We work with brides throughout all over Arkansas and beyond, and our stylists are here to make your bridal appointment feel personal, comfortable, and completely about you.

You don't have to know your silhouette before you walk through our doors. You don't have to have your whole wedding-day look figured out. You just have to come ready to try something on.

Because sometimes you need to see it on your body.

Sometimes you need to move in it.

And sometimes you just need to stand in front of that mirror and have that little moment where you think…

“Oh. There she is.”

That's what wedding dress shopping is all about!
