How Much Should I Budget for My Wedding Dress?
There are a lot of numbers that come with planning a wedding.
Venue prices. Guest counts. Catering minimums. Photographer packages. Florals. And eventually, one very important question:
“How much should I budget for my wedding dress?”
If you're feeling a little overwhelmed by that question, take a breath.
After nearly five decades of helping Arkansas brides find their wedding dresses, we've learned that there isn't one magic number—and there certainly isn't a number that determines how much your dress should mean to you.
Your wedding is personal. Your budget should be, too.
Before You Shop for Your Dress, Know Your Wedding Budget
Before you make your first bridal appointment, sit down with your fiancé and anyone else who is financially contributing to your wedding.
Start with the big picture:
How much are we comfortable spending on the entire wedding?
Then break it down.
Think of your budget like a pie. You have a certain amount to work with, and you get to decide which pieces deserve the biggest slices.
Maybe photography is everything to you because you want those memories captured perfectly.
Maybe the venue is your dream.
Maybe food and hospitality are at the top of your list.
Or maybe you've pictured yourself in your wedding dress for as long as you can remember, and finding that gown is one of the most important parts of the wedding to you.
None of those choices are wrong.
We don't believe every bride should spend a certain percentage of her wedding budget on her dress. We believe you should decide what matters most to you.
So, How Much Do Wedding Dresses Cost?
At The Bridal Cottage, our special-order wedding gowns range from $1,500–$5,500, with our average “sweet spot” around $1,800–$2,500.
We also have beautiful options below and above that range.
What makes one gown cost more than another?
It can be the designer, fabric, construction, lace, beading, or customization.
And here's something brides are often surprised by:
You can't always look at a wedding dress and know what it costs.
We've seen simple, clean gowns cost more than fully beaded gowns. A beautiful Mikado, crepe, or silk fabric can be more expensive than a gown covered in embellishment.
So don't walk into a bridal appointment thinking, “That dress looks expensive, so it must be out of my budget.”
Share with your stylist how much you want to spend on your dress, and we will take it from there.
Your Dress Budget Isn't Just the Price of the Gown
One of the easiest ways to make wedding dress shopping stressful is to forget about the costs that come after you've fallen in love with the dress.
Remember to think about:
- Sales tax
- Alterations, which typically start around $300 and vary depending on the work needed
- Veil and accessories
- Rush fees, if you have a shorter timeline
- Customizations
- Shipping or other order-related costs
Most of our special-order gowns take approximately four to six months to arrive, so your wedding date matters, too.
That's why we encourage brides to know their all-in budget before they start shopping.
Because the goal isn't to find a beautiful dress and then spend the rest of the appointment worrying about what it will actually cost.
The goal is to find a beautiful dress and enjoy the moment you're in.
What If My Budget Is Firm?
This is something we really want brides to hear:
You never need to be embarrassed about your budget at The Bridal Cottage.
If you tell us, “I don't want to spend more than $2,000,” we respect that.
We're not going to pull a gown that's far outside your budget just because we think you'll love it.
Why?
Because we want you to be able to relax.
We want you to see yourself in the mirror and get a little emotional.
We want you to turn around and see your people smiling at you.
We want you to dance around in the dress.
We want you to feel beautiful.
We don't want you standing there doing math in your head.
Your budget isn't something we're judging. It's simply information that helps us take better care of you.
And when you give us your honest number, we can be honest with you about what we pull.
What If I Find a Dress I Love That's More Than My Budget?
That's a personal decision.
If you and your fiancé decide you want to adjust your budget because you've found something you truly love, that's completely up to you.
We aren't here to tell you what your dress is “worth.”
We don't know what the rest of your wedding budget looks like, and we don't believe it's our place to decide what should matter most to you.
That's your story.
Our job is to listen, guide you, and celebrate with you.
If your budget changes, we'll work with the new number.
If it doesn't, we'll keep looking.
Either way, we're still in your corner.
And Here's Something Else We Want You to Know...
A higher price tag doesn't automatically mean a better wedding dress.
Quality matters to us at every price point.
As a bridal boutique, we intentionally choose gowns because we believe they are beautiful, well-made, supportive, and worthy of our brides—not simply because they have a certain price tag.
You might fall in love with a $2,000 gown.
You might fall in love with a $4,000 gown.
You might surprise everyone, including yourself, with the one that makes you emotional.
That's why we don't want you shopping with a number in your head and nothing else.
We want you to shop with an honest budget—and then give yourself permission to experience the dresses.
Our Best Advice for Wedding Dress Shopping
If you remember one thing from this blog, make it this:
Know your budget before you shop.
Know your overall wedding budget.
Know who is contributing.
Know what matters most to you.
Know your all-in dress budget.
Then tell your bridal stylist.
Once that number is established, you can let someone else worry about the math for a little while.
You can focus on the part you've been waiting for.
The dress.
The moment you see yourself in the mirror.
The feeling you get when you realize, “Wait... this could be it.”
That's what we want for our brides.
Because wedding dress shopping shouldn't feel like a transaction.
It should feel like the beginning of something you'll remember forever.
And we'll be here to help you experience it.
