How far in advance do you need to order your wedding dress?

One of the first questions we hear from brides—right after the congratulations and happy tears—is: “How far in advance do I need to order my wedding dress?”

And here at The Bridal Cottage, we always start the same way.

We celebrate you.

Because this is a big moment. You’re engaged, you’re planning something deeply meaningful, and we are genuinely excited for you before anything else.

From there, we help you understand what this journey actually looks like in real life.

The Ideal Timeline: 8–12 Months

In a perfect world, we want you shopping 8 to 12 months before your wedding date.

Not to pressure you—but to give you peace.

This timeline gives you space for:
 • ordering your gown from the designer
 • standard shipping without rush fees
 • thoughtful, stress-free alterations
 • bridal portraits if you choose to do them

Most importantly, it gives you time to enjoy this experience instead of rushing through it.

Because this should feel intentional and exciting—not stressful.

What Happens After You Say “Yes” to Your Dress

Most wedding gowns are made to order.

So once you say yes, we place your order directly with the designer using your size, customizations, and gown details.

In most cases, your dress takes about 4 to 6 months to be created and shipped.

Then we move into alterations, which typically take 1 to 2 months, depending on your gown and seamstress schedule.

You’ll usually have 2 to 4 fittings so everything is perfected just for you.

If you’re planning bridal portraits, those are usually done 6–8 weeks before your wedding, once your dress fits exactly how it should.

What If You Don’t Have 8–12 Months?

This is where we want you to pause and breathe—because you’re okay.

We work with every timeline.

If your engagement is shorter, you still have options:

Rush & expedited production
Our designers (Essense of Australia, Stella York, All Who Wander, Hayley Paige, and our new private line Magnolia) offer faster production timelines for an additional fee.

Designer studio availability
Sometimes we can access gowns already in production or recently made through designers' live studios, which shortens wait times.

Off-the-showroom floor options
We also have gowns you can take home the same day or place into Layaway.

And our BluLilly collection—named after the owner Lindy’s rescue dogs Blu and Lilly—is another way we offer beautiful gowns that are ready sooner, often at more accessible pricing.

We’ve seen brides find their dress:
 • 6 months out
 • 3 months out
 • 6 weeks out
 • even days before the wedding

Every timeline is different. And every timeline is workable.

The Biggest Misunderstanding About Timing

One of the most common things we hear is that you feel like you need to “wait until everything is perfect” before you start shopping.

You may feel like you need to:
 • lose weight first
 • figure out your final vision
 • or wait until closer to the date

But wedding dress sizing and ordering doesn’t work that way—and waiting too long can actually limit your options, not improve them.

We also see how overwhelmed brides can get from social media telling you to shop everywhere, try everything, and not trust your consultant.

But bridal shopping isn’t about chaos—it’s about clarity.

What You Might Not Expect

You may be surprised by:
 • how long made-to-order gowns actually take
 • how different bridal alterations are from everyday clothing
 • how many fittings it takes to perfect your dress
 • how quickly styles can change over time

Trends shift. Designers release collections twice a year. Dresses come and go faster than most people realize.

The Emotional Pressure Around Timing

When you feel stressed about timing, it usually isn’t just logistics—it’s fear.

Fear of:
 • not seeing enough options
 • not having enough time to decide
 • not getting the “full experience”

That pressure can make you feel like you need to rush your decision.

But your dress is not a race.

The right dress is never chosen from pressure—it’s chosen from emotion, confidence, and connection.

How We Guide You Through It

From the very beginning, we here at The Bridal Cottage are transparent with you about timelines and expectations.

We talk through your wedding date before you ever step into a gown so there are no surprises later.

And during your appointment, we continuously check in so you always know what is realistic for your timeline.

We never want you saying yes to a dress that creates stress in your life.

So if something doesn’t align, we pivot—whether that’s rush options, designer availability, or off-the-showroom floor gowns.

That way, you can stay present with your people and focus on what actually matters: how you feel in the dress.

What It’s Like When You Say Yes

There is no single way you’ll react when you find your dress.

You might cry.

You might laugh and dance.

Or you might go completely quiet—just staring at yourself for a moment before softly saying, “yes.”

All of those moments are right.

Because it’s not about how you react—it’s about that feeling of certainty when you know.

And that moment belongs to you.

One Final Truth About Timing

If we could leave you with one thing, it’s this:

Do your research when choosing your bridal boutique. Find a place you trust. And once you do—trust the professionals guiding you.

We’ve been helping brides here at The Bridal Cottage in the heart of the Park Hill Historic District in North Little Rock, Arkansas for nearly 50 years.

We understand timelines, designers, shipping, alterations—and how all of it works together.

You don’t have to carry that stress.

Just show up, be open, and let yourself be a bride.
