You’ve seen it on Pinterest, you may know other brides who have done it, and now you’re wondering how to capture the mismatched bridesmaid look! The key to perfecting a monochromatic collaboration is actually organization! Specifying clear, distinct guidelines for your bridesmaids, such as selected color, length and fabric, can make your bridesmaid dress-choosing process easy and more enjoyable! Remember, be specific! Especially when choosing a color. There are so many different shades and hues of blue, pink, green… and everyone has their own idea of what “coral” or “plum” is, most likely because we all see color a little differently. Also, designers have their own idea about which color is which. And we bridal consultants see all kinds of different names for colors! It can all be very confusing… So, how do you, the bride, avoid confusion when selecting a color for your ladies?

Before bringing in your ladies to choose their own style, first select which designer that you would like to use. As stated before, each designer has their own shade (and name) for varying colors. Mismatching designers could be a catastrophe. Also, you want to make sure that the gowns that you order for your ladies are all made from the same bolt of fabric, to prevent any deviation in color in the gowns. After selecting your designer, then choose the fabric. Color also deviates between fabrics. Sometimes it helps to see which color options are available in which fabrics, before selecting a style that you love. Once you found the color that matches your wedding in the fabric that compliments your gown, select a length. Most bridesmaids come in short (knee-length) or long (to fit a 6’0” woman) and sometimes in tea-length (below the knee). You want to make sure that all of your ladies have the same gown length before letting them choose the style.

Once you’ve set these clear guidelines (designer, color, fabric and length) then you can let your ladies choose a style of their choice! Just remember that when leaving the style up to your ladies, make sure that you have a plethora of options for your bridesmaids. Certain styles are more similar than others. You wouldn’t want a couple of your ladies to look like they tried to match and everyone else look different from them. Also, there is not as much of a variety of one-shoulder or gowns with straps. You have to make sure that you have the same number of available options to bridesmaids. And let your ladies know which dresses that the other bridesmaids have chosen as they choose them. Send pictures in a group text or email, so that your ladies can each select a different style.

After each bridesmaid has chosen their gown, look at the dresses collectively to make sure that you have a cohesive look that you’re happy with! Then, you can place your order! Consultants suggest making the look even more your own by incorporating a shoe or accessory in another designated color. This gives your ladies an opportunity to accessorize their gown and continue with the more personal look. Remember, you are the bride! And there are no fashion faux pas when it comes to your special day, so make it all your own!
